Mick McGavin

McGavin, Mickcrop.jpgMeet Mick McGavin - HNI Wisconsin's newest Account Executive. Mick is no stranger to Risk Management, having spent over 25 years in the industry with stints as a Safety Supervisor and Director of Risk Management. At HNI, he looks forward to sharing his knowledge and making true change with our clients.

What inspired you to make a career move to HNI?

HNI does things differently. They don't take a sales approach to insurance, but rather produce a partnership with clients and discuss the hard hitting topics outside of insurance. I felt as if my ideologies were in line with HNI's and after meeting with a few team members at HNI, I knew this would be a great fit.

What's the most important thing you've learned after spending 25 years in risk management?

The golden rule of risk management, which is, never risk more than you can afford to lose.

How do you plan to spend your mandatory 1 week unplug?

I plan to spend my week in March, specifically celebrating March Madness. Having a daughter who lives in the New York area, I figured I could visit her and also enjoy a few basketball games at Madison Square Garden.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I started taking piano lessons about five years ago and spend my spare time practicing, watching sports, and reading. My favorite genre is Historical Fiction.

I also write for the International Risk Management Institute in my free time. I am currently the principal contributor to Practical Risk Management, which is an online reference tool for risk managers.

Any advice for someone looking to get into risk management?

There's a lot of diversity to the nature of the work - it's a really great career. Opportunities stem from claims, contracting, enterprise risk management, and so much more. There are a lot entry points looking to build a career and just because you start in one area doesn't mean you will stay there.
