What inspired you to make a career move to HNI?

I was very familiar with HNI as a client in a prior role. In that role, I (naively) assumed the HNI level of service was the norm. When I changed to other subsequent roles, I realized this was not only not the norm, but was a stark contrast. It was clear how HNI’s commitment to de-risking is exceptional.

In addition, as I saw the wave of change sweeping healthcare and what could be done to help healthcare organizations, the advisory model at HNI naturally fit. My experience with HNI from the client perspective paired perfectly how we can meet the needs in the healthcare industry.

What were you most surprised to learn about HNI?

HNI’s commitment to their model of “risk advisory first” is anchored and consistent throughout the organization. I think ‘culture’ is tossed around somewhat fluidly at some organizations. A well-integrated culture takes focus, effort, and attention to get a team engaged and committed. I appreciate that HNI truly “walks the walk”.

How do you plan to spend your mandatory 1 week unplug?

I best recharge by slowing down and staying close to home. So, I’ll likely do some reading and spending time with my family.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I had a brief career in professional athletics. I had stints in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and Arena Football League (AFL). It was an amazing experience that allowed me to fulfill a childhood dream, meet great people, and travel. That experience also had a profoundly positive impact on the rest of my professional career.

My primary hobby these days is competing in triathlon. I belong to a local club and train year-around. I’ve found that sport feeds my competitive nature and provides a vehicle to stay healthy.

Any advice for someone looking to get into insurance?

I suggest that someone considering this industry should look closely at their own personal priorities. Traditional broker models seem to serve the broker more than the client. Someone entering the field will be most successful and satisfied focusing on the needs of the client first and recommending solutions (some insurance, some not) that best assist that client in meeting its goals.
