WHAT IS A DE-RISKATHON?

The DE-RISKATHON is annual leadership retreat for members of The DE-RISKING Network. Unlike a typical conference, the DE-RISKATHON will focus on the biggest risks in the transportation industry: Leadership, Culture, and Operations.

When you attend the DE-RISKATHON, you'll be contributing your insights in breakout sessions and be guided through workshop exercises by people who have performed at the highest levels.

The DE-RISKATHON focuses on the 3 areas of hidden risk that hold great transportation companies back.

 1. LEADERSHIP

As a leader, it's your job to drive change and forward progress at your company. Some companies do this really well, while others have a hard time getting big initiatives accomplished.

 2. CULTURE

Without a strong culture, nothing sticks. We'll focus on building a culture that engages drivers, leaders, and office staff.

 3. OPERATIONS

Execution is critical. Transportation companies that have their entire team performing at the highest levels outperform their competition.

 DAY 1: LEADERSHIP
Navy SEAL Leadership Training

Under extreme pressure, the problems that come from bad leadership are exacerbated. The Navy Seals are put into some of the most extreme scenarios imaginable. Their training is renowned for its rigor and discipline, culminating with the infamous Hell Week.

Workshop Facilitator: Flynn Cochran
Flynn

Flynn is a former U.S. Navy SEAL Officer, McKinsey & Co. Engagement Manager, and graduate of Harvard Business School. Flynn spent eight years in the Navy, six of them in the SEAL Teams. He served as an Assistant Platoon Commander and Platoon Commander at SEAL Team One and deployed three times to combat zones in support of the Global War on Terror.

FlynnExtreme Ownership.jpg excelled as a SEAL officer and put those lessons to real-world application, in building, training and combat-advising a host-nation special operations units that successfully targeted Al Qaeda and allied terrorist organizations.

The workshop will be based off the #1 best-selling book, Extreme Ownership, which was written by Flynn's fellow SEALs.  It covers everything that they learned on the battlefield of Ramadi, Iraq, and applies it to common scenarios that leaders face in the business world.

Happy Hour Boat Cruise and Dinner

IRQ_3rdWardAfter an intensive workshop, we're going to hop on a boat and have a little fun.

We'll cruise down the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan, then go to dinner in Milwaukee's Third Ward neighborhood.

 DAY 2: OPERATIONS & CULTURE

Day 2 will dig into the hidden risks that exist within Operations and Culture.

USING TECHNOLOGY TO DRIVE SAFETY & PERFORMANCE
There are a lot of tools available now that promise to improve safety performance (from cameras to predictive analytics to driver scorecards). We'll dig into each of them and also learn some best practices on how to roll these improvements out to drivers so they adopt them instead of resist them.

NAVIGATING BROKER-SHIPPER CONTRACTS
The broker-shipper arrangement is become an increasingly complex (and litigated). We've found that this area is largely undressed by many transportation companies and represents a huge liability. We'll hear from a legal expert that works to ensure transportation companies are protected.

RECRUITING AND RETAINING GREAT DRIVERS
Recruiting and retaining drivers is still one of the biggest challenges in our industry. The decisions drivers make also have a a huge impact on our company's overall performance. We'll hear from leading expert Dan Baker on building a culture that appreciates drivers. We'll also hear from experts that are using data and technology to get better results.

DRIVING DOWN THE COST OF CLAIMS
The cost of claims is the biggest driver of insurance costs. We'll hear from the country's leading Third Party Administrator (TPA) on how a few factors in your control can significantly reduce incurred costs.  We'll also hear from top transportation defense attorneys on the tactics that plaintiff attorneys to land nuclear verdicts.

THE DRIVER HEALTH CARE DILEMMA
Driver health and wellness is a difficult problem. We're bringing in a former Olympic swimming contender to share how driving truck impacted his health - and how he's now helping truckers stay fit on the road. We'll also hear from an expert on how companies are tackling the increasing costs of offering health care coverage.
